You cannot be conscious and be unhappy at the same time. You cannot be conscious and offer resistance to outside situations at the same time. You cannot be conscious and feel negative emotions at the same time. All unhappiness, resistance and negativity stems from the unconscious. If you were conscious while being unhappy, would you choose unhappiness? And if you were conscious, would you choose to keep the unhappiness alive?
When we are experiencing negative emotions, we are completely identified with the outside situation that is not going the way we want. We are identified with our own thoughts, emotions, and feelings. It is we who choose to keep the negativity alive in our being by lending our energy to it, albeit unconsciously. Present moment awareness is the most powerful antidote to negativity. Remember, negativity thrives only in your absence - it simply cannot survive in "your presence".
The next time you are feeling negative, just try completely being aware of everything - what you are thinking, what emotions you are experiencing, and how your body is feeling. Become a witness to the moment, a witness that is fully present in the now. As your awareness increases, you will gain more clarity and see the negativity lose it's grip over you.
